Actually, I do find the two terms: harper and harpist usefull.
Harpists - that is those who play primarily pedal harps and harpers -
those who play primarly non-pedal harps are different. They have different
techniques, and play signicantly different music much of the time. I don't
think of either as superior - just different.
And, there are some other instruments that make a similiar
distinction - violins - a violinist is not the same as a fiddler, and
piano - a pianist is not the same as a piano-player, although there the
distinction is less clear.
