A strathspey isn't just a dance, but it refers to a particular rhythm,
and a particular kind of dance step. It involves an extended beat,
with a kind of lift for the dancers, on the 1st of every 8(?) beats. I
despair of explaining it in ASCII...but, if you can see it done and
hear the music it would help you get the style. Try contacting the
RSCDS - Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, or Scottish Country
Dancers - many city & county parks & recreation departments sponsor
Scottish dance groups; the RSCDS is an accrediting organization.
(It really helps to learn to do the steps yourself. Dance music goes
better if you can dance it. Strathspeys take practice, but they look
terrific when you get it.)
