Being a singer as well as a harpist, I usually try to start off with a
song with *very simple* accompanyment. This gets the worst of the hand
shakes out of the way with little harm done and once I've gotten through
the first piece I'm ok.

On the topic of mistakes, a few months ago, I played for a friend's
wedding. The piece I played for the processional was one that I've been
working on for years, but I don't think I've ever managed to play it
through without a mistake. :) I got a bit lost at one point, paused and
started from the beginning of the phrase again. The timing was such that
when I struck the last chords, she and her father had just reached the
altar and she was giving him a kiss as he gave her away. I couldn't have
planned it any better!
